Father Anthony Speakman

In my early years it seemed that I was destined for the stage. I trained privately under Margaret Lacey – Film star and actress – and I was also trained as a lyrical tenor under Monfydd Jeffries Jones , herself having trained under Madame Novello Davies – Ivor Novello’s mother – deportment and dancing was in the hands of Miss May Berry.

I appeared mainly in musicals, operatic and a few plays, mainly comedy, throughout the North. However the stage was not to be my ultimate goal – and God called me to the Sacred priesthood.

I was ordained at St Asaph Cathedral in 1971 and served as a priest in Newtown, Montgomeryshire; Holywell and St Marylebone, London where I also served as Chaplain to the London Clinic.

Other chaplaincies have included – Chaplain to the Knights Templar and I was made a “Chevalier” by the Regent General based in Geneva. Chaplain to the Royal Signal Regiment (with the rank of Captain) and “Padre” for the Princess Louisa of Kensington Old Commander Association. I was appointed by the Crown Appointments to the Loving of St Philip + St Mark Camberwell as vicar.

My spiritual journey led me to the Roman Catholic Church and after spending three years in Rome at Pontificio Beda College served at Our Lady’s, St John’s Wood under the wonderful Fr McGowan.
